Five For Friday – My Classroom

22 Feb

Five_for_Friday

Today I am doing a teacher post for Five for Friday.

This is where you share five new things from your classroom this week.

  1. Parents Helpers started this week.  I have had 12 parents volunteer (50%) for maths groups, three days a week!
  2. We have had many wet weather days this week.  I found a website (http://www.adventuretofitness.com) that my students love that is great to get them moving (safely) in the classroom.
  3. Buddies – we met our year 6/7 buddies this week.  It was love at first sight for the little kids!
  4. Each week we have a new paint experience. This week was string painting. Don’t they look great.Jade 005
  5. We have been reading the Creation Story in Religion.  Check out our nature gardens that some students made during inside time.

I chipped my new manicure after 1 day! FFS

My T Box was playing up and wouldn’t record so I had to watch some of my shows on my I PAD instead. FFS

My oven has stopped working so I had to buy a birthday cake instead of making one. FFS

My oven isn’t working so I had to cook on the stove top all week instead of just chucking food in the oven to cook! FFS

I won tickets to the movies but couldn’t go as it was parent/teacher information night – and as I am the teacher I had to attend! FFS

I spent my Sunday up at school planning. FFS

Posts – Pre Plan or On The Spot

19 Feb

Do you pre plan your blog posts?

I started this blog at beginning of the school holidays – when I had my days to myself.  During this time I would write my posts in the mornings (sitting on the couch watching morning TV in my pajamas).  I would then scroll through and read other blogs and comment and be done and dusted by 11.00am.

This_is_Who_I_Am

But now that I am back at work that is no longer possible.

Last week I  barely wrote at all! The week before I was better but I did write all my posts on the weekend and just published them throughout the week.  Damm you work!! You are getting in the way of my blogging!!

So I have decided that it is best if I write my posts on a Sunday – working out which one I would post on which day (often depending on what linky I am linking up with) and storing them in my drafts folder.

Then when I get up in the morning all I need to do is hit publish on that days post and add my link to my linky party of choice.  This means that I don’t get a chance to read and comment on other blogs until that night (and I’ll admit that it even may be the following night).  But that’s what’s working for me at the moment.

How do you manage writing your blog posts and commenting while working full time?

Storage Ideas

13 Feb

I have 2 new storage ideas that I want to share with you.

The first one is for the home. I stole this idea from a friend who got the idea from pinterest.  It is a great way to store your necklaces and scarves. I love it and it is so much easier to choose which one to wear each day.

I bought a three rung towel rack from Howards Storage ($16), the type that hangs on the back a door.

My second storage idea was mentioned by a fellow teacher at a showcase day.  It’s a great way to store decks of cards and flash cards in your classroom.

I used a hanging jewellery storage display with clear pockets.  I bought these on ebay for $5 each!

I hope you find these ideas useful!

Valentines Day Preparation

12 Feb

Do you have plans for Valentines Day?

Heart

Last week I made dinner plans for the husband and myself for Thursday night (Valentines Day).  The first restaurant I rang was booked out already (a week in advance). Who knew people were that organized.  Luckily I was about to secure us a booking at a local restaurant (Olive Branch).

We don’t give gifts but I am usually lucky enough to score a bunch of flowers (that is after I have reminded him every day the week before that flowers would be a good idea).

I even have a new dress to wear from Country Road.

So we are sorted but I would like to find a simple art project for my class to make to give to their parents on Thursday.  Remember that my class is made up of 4, 5 and 6 year olds so the craft needs to be easy, simple and not cause the teacher to have a melt down.

Any suggestions?

The Dreaded Homework

8 Feb

This may come as a surprise to some but as a teacher I HATE homework.

Parents often WANT homework but in reality they don’t have TIME for homework.

Homework

As a teacher I totally get that families have busy lives.

I understand that it is not 1960 anymore, when kids were home in the afternoons with MUM with nothing else to do but homework and ride their bikes.

I acknowledge that kids do ballet, swimming, art classes, cricket, soccer and more after school.

I get that some of you arrive home at 5.30pm and are trying to get the washing in, bath the kids, cook dinner and do homework all at the same time.

Homework is meant to be a QUICK revision. Anything your child has for homework should of been taught at school previously.

So home readers should be a quick easy read with no stress and tears.

and if you don’t have time to do homework – that is OK! (no child in my class will ever get punished for not doing their homework!)

Do you know what’s actually more important than homework?

Engaging in a conversation with your child about their day and reading them a story at bedtime!

Tell me what your thoughts are on homework?
